// WHAT A BATCH RUN ACTUALLY IS
A batch run is one part, produced many times, to one locked specification. That sounds obvious until you have tried to get it done. Order 200 units from a hobbyist with two printers and you get eight weeks and a color shift halfway through. Order 200 units from an injection molder and you get a tooling quote that assumes you meant 200,000.
Batch FDM printing sits in the gap: quantities that are too large to print on a desk and too small to justify a steel mold. The economics work because the setup cost is measured in hours instead of weeks, and because a farm running twelve machines in parallel turns a three-week serial job into a few days of scheduled production.

// THE MOLDING CROSSOVER, HONESTLY
Injection molding wins on unit price at volume. That is not in dispute, and any printing service that tells you otherwise is selling you something. The real question is where the crossover sits for your part.
Tooling for a production mold is typically a five-figure commitment and several weeks of lead time before a single part exists. That cost is fixed: it is the same whether you sell 500 units or 50,000. Batch printing has effectively no tooling cost, so it starts cheap and stays linear — every part costs roughly what the last one cost.
Printing usually stays the better answer when:
- Total volume is in the hundreds rather than the tens of thousands
- The design may still change — a revision costs a new slice, not a new mold
- You need parts this month, not this quarter
- You are testing a market and cannot justify the tooling spend yet
- The part has geometry that would need side actions or complex tooling to mold
- You need several variants of the same part without paying for several molds
And when you cross the line, we will say so. Sending you to a molder with a realistic assessment is a better outcome than quoting you a batch run that makes no commercial sense.

FILE REVIEW
Every file is reviewed before it is quoted. Wall thickness, overhangs, orientation trade-offs, and anything that will fight the process comes back to you in writing, at no charge, before you have spent anything.

FIRST ARTICLE
We print one and send photos and measurements. Production does not start until you approve it. This is the single most useful step in the whole process: it defines “correct” before 300 parts exist rather than after.

PROFILE LOCK
Once the first article is approved, the print profile is frozen and stored against your part. Layer height, wall generator, supports, temperatures, speeds — nothing moves. Unit 400 is produced from the same file and settings as unit 1.

PLATE PACKING
Parts are nested to fill each build plate, then the same plate is dispatched across parallel machines. This is where batch pricing comes from: the machines are working while nobody is standing over them.

LOT CONTROL
Where quantity allows, a run is produced from a single filament lot, so color and behavior stay uniform across the batch instead of drifting between spools.

INSPECTION & PACK
Parts are inspected against the approved first article under our written procedures, then packed to survive transit. Non-conforming parts are pulled, not shipped.

// MATERIALS FOR BATCH WORK
PLA (12 stocked colors) and PLA Matte (7 colors) for display pieces, enclosures, and indoor parts where dimensional precision and finish matter more than heat resistance. PETG (4 colors) when parts need impact tolerance, outdoor exposure, or a bit more temperature headroom.
For functional and load-bearing work: ABS, PA6-CF (carbon-fiber reinforced nylon), and PA6-GF (glass-fiber reinforced nylon). These run through a dedicated high-temperature drying workflow — seven AMS HT units in service — because reinforced nylon printed from damp filament produces parts that look right and fail early. Ten AMS 2 Pro units handle automated multi-spool feed and multicolor production across the fleet.
Materials outside that list are quoted case-by-case, and we will tell you plainly when something is outside what we can qualify rather than substituting quietly.
// WHEN BATCH FDM IS THE WRONG CALL
Told up front, because finding out at delivery is expensive for both of us:
- Machining-grade tolerances. FDM is a calibrated process, not a precision-ground one. If your critical fits need tighter than this process holds, we will say so at file review instead of shipping you a disappointment.
- Optically clear parts. Layer lines are inherent to the process. Transparency is not something post-processing fixes economically at batch quantity.
- Sustained high heat. PLA softens well below what a hot car interior reaches. Material choice moves that ceiling, but it does not remove it.
- Certified regulated parts. We hold no certified quality-management system and use no accredited calibration. Aerospace, medical, and structural-certification work belongs elsewhere, and we say so on our capabilities sheet too.
- Genuinely high volume. Tens of thousands of units of a stable design is molding territory.
// WHAT TO SEND FOR A BATCH QUOTE
A useful quote needs four things: what the part is and what it does, how many, when you need it, and what it needs to survive (indoor or outdoor, load-bearing or cosmetic, any critical dimensions). Files are welcome but not required to start — we will request STL, STEP, 3MF, or OBJ once the spec is agreed.
We do not offer design, modeling, or reverse-engineering services. Print-ready files only. Your files stay yours, we sign a mutual NDA on request, and by submitting a file you confirm you own or license the design — we decline trademarked and copyrighted third-party work.

HOW MUCH CHEAPER IS A LARGER BATCH?
Per-unit price falls as quantity rises, because setup is paid once and plate packing gets more efficient. Every quote shows the price breaks alongside the quantity you asked for, so you can see what the next tier up would cost before deciding.
CAN YOU HOLD MY FILES AND PROFILES FOR REORDERS?
Yes, and that is the point of the profile lock. A reorder skips setup and reproduces the approved first article, which is why repeat runs are both faster and cheaper than the first one.
WILL ALL THE PARTS ACTUALLY MATCH?
That is what locked profiles, single-lot filament, and first-article approval exist to deliver. Color is the variable people underestimate — different spools of nominally the same color can differ, which is why a run is produced from one lot wherever quantity allows.
CAN YOU SHIP DIRECT TO MY CUSTOMERS?
Yes. Batch runs can be packed and shipped to you, or fulfilled direct to your customers from Torrance. Assembly, kitting, and branded packaging are available as part of the run.
DO YOU TAKE RECURRING MONTHLY PRODUCTION?
Yes — that is our production-partner arrangement: a standing schedule, stored profiles, setup paid once, and pricing reviewed quarterly rather than requoted every month.
